automating minimonsta in ableton live

keeping you folks out there posted on minz releases is only one reason for having this blog. another one is to share tips and tricks that help me to get music done at all. first off is something you think should be easy: automating gforce's minimonsta plugin in ableton live.

ableton live has a limitation when it comes to automating vst plugin parameters: you can only control the first 128 parameters. for most plugins this is no problem, as they have less than 128 parameters. but some plugins, like gforce's minimonsta, have more than 128, and so it can happen that some obvious parameters aren't automatable in live.

the solution to this problem can be found in the manual of predatohm, a distortion plugin by ohmforce, who also helped creating minimonsta. they describe how you can remap the parameters to determine the order in which they show up in your host... bingo. all you have to do is edit a certain configuration file, which i did.

after you've downloaded my configuration file (it should be called 'mini_reorder.cfg.txt'), save it somewhere on your harddisk. next, fire up ableton, insert minimonsta on a track, go to minimonsta setup (right above the keyboard), click 'load', locate your file and activate 'autoload [filename]'. now re-insert minimonsta, and the parameter list should start with the most obvious parameters.

if you do not like the order i have chosen, open the configuration file in a simple text editor, scroll down until you find the line 'parameter_reorder_map = {' and reorder the parameters below that to your liking by just cut-pasting lines. save and reopen in the minimonsta setup.

this has been tested in ableton live 7.0.12 on both windows xp sp3 and osx 10.4.11 (vst and au).
